The ceramics program at Artists Exchange is our most popular visual arts program. As one of the few studios offering wheel throwing classes for children, we give people of all ages access to a very hands-on, therapeutic and challenging medium like no other. Classes in wheel throwing can accommodate up to seven students, while hand building classes can accommodate up to ten. Sessions are eight weeks long and run four times each year. Students are encouraged to repeat wheel throwing classes to continue building skills. Visit the art classes page on our website to learn more.

Artists Exchange offers an open clay studio on Mondays and Saturdays. Participants must have previous experience in a clay studio, as no instruction will be offered during this time.

$10 fee per session includes use of all Artists Exchange equipment including pottery wheels, canvas covered table, extruder and clay tools. Glaze firing fees charged separately.

 Glaze firing fees:

Pieces under 8 inches:

$10 per shelf (full round)
$6 per half shelf (half round)

Pieces over 8 inches:

$8 for individual pieces
$20 per shelf (full round)
$12 per half shelf (half round)

Supplies (clay, glazes, etc.) can be purchased separately through Artists Exchange.

Directed Open Studio

Directed Open Studio is designed for individuals of all ages who want to learn the art and craft of ceramics but need a flexible schedule. Students will have the opportunity to work within the studio at their own pace with the guidance of a professional potter at their choice of hand building, slip casting, wheel throwing, tile making, slab building, or sculpting. Open to beginners and great for any clay artist. If you’ve ever had the desire to get a taste of what happens in a ceramic studio but have a crazy schedule this is your opportunity. Please note some projects will take more than one session. Please ask to speak to the facilitator to get an idea of what your time needs may be. Students will be responsible for purchasing materials (available at the Exchange) and for kiln firing fees.
