Art Classes

Artists' Exchange offers a variety of art classes and workshops for children and adults.  Each class meets once per week for eight weeks consecutively (with the exception of summer classes which meet for six consecutive weeks), while workshops are typically offered during school vacations.

Artisits' Exchange art class offerings include Drawing, Painting, Pottery Wheel, Throwing Mosaics, Jewelry, and more.  Artists' Exchange also offers school and group programs, field trips to our art studios, Girls' Night Out gatherings for women, birthday parties and summer camps.

Spend time with your child in a creative space learning how to make beautiful clay artwork. Parent and child work together to make various projects out of clay including picture frames, flower pots, coil-built pottery and more!

Students will create 2 and 3 dimensional works  of their favorite animals while exploring with a variety of materials and techniques.

FOUNDATIONS IN ART

Through exploring different artists and their work, and experimenting  with various materials and techniques, students will develop their art making skills.  Mediums include pencil, watercolor and tempera/acrylic paint as well as printmaking.

D.I.Y. upcycled Art

Ever see a beat-up mirror at a flea market or have a collection of things you cannot part with because you could DEFINITELY use it for something? Use this class as a springboard into a world of creating new things with an artistic flare out of everyday objects and discarded items.

This class will touch on an array of painting techniques including brush strokes, washes, building dimension and color layering. This is a great class to learn new skills or brush up on old ones. Some materials provided.

Jewelry: Lost Wax Process

Tuesdays 6:30 - 8pm
Students will carve and form wax models for the lost wax casting process. Instructor will take wax pieces to be cast upon completion. Students will learn how to clean and finish castings to create a piece of jewelry. Materials fee may apply.

Pottery Wheel Throwing: Beginner

Take everything you know about clay and turn it sideways! Use basic clay building and glazing skills while incorporating new techniques such as clay extruding, slab rolling and scrafitto to create exciting new projects like clay instruments, mosaics and more.

Intermediate Wheel Throwing

Build upon previous wheel throwing skills to create truly functional pieces of pottery. Students will explore different types of clay bodies, learn how to reclaim their used clay to create new usable clay, and experiment with new glazing techniques including that of the increasingly popular image transfer on clay. Some supplies included. Students must have taken at least 2 previous wheel throwing classes.

THE SCIENCE OF CLAY

The ceramics studio relies on earth, water and fire. As with many art forms, artists find direct correlations between science and art. What happens when clay is left to dry? How much water is too much? What is a kiln anyway? This handbullding class is designed for the curious student who wants to learn the science behind clay while making projects.

Fundamentals of Drawing

A true beginner class. Students will learn all the basic skills necessary, practicing techniques such as form, shading line and perspective, all geared toward making drawings more lively.

CERAMICS: PRIMITIVE HANDBUILDING

Coils and slabs are the bases of all handmade clay crafts. Students will study clay as a serious medium, building on true skill to expand ideas into large scale pieces. Come join us and see what you can make clay do.

Paint with the brushes of Van Gogh and sculpt with the hands of Picasso. Discover the worlds of great artists through the ages by creating original works of art inspired by the masters. Each session will cover different artists with a wide range of backgrounds and styles.

Cartooning Fundamentals

SCULPTURAL BOOKMAKING

This class is for those who are truly passionate about clay and everything the medium has to offer. NCECA, The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, is a dynamic organization that fosters global education and appreciation for the ceramic arts. At the annual conference there is an Exhibition for K-12 students to honor excellence and love for ceramics. Artists Exchange is so proud of the talents of its students that we want to encourage entry into this prestigious program.  Using pure imagination, students in this class will be pushing their skills in hand building and wheel throwing further to create inspiring clay works.

CERAMIC SCULPTURE

In this sculpture class, you will learn to create 3 dimensional objects out of clay. Working from still lifes, 2 dimensional images or drawing, you can sculpt these objects in clay. We will also be sculpting either the human figure or animal figure.

2012 WINTER/SPRING CLASS REGISTRATION FORM
 

Open Clay Studio

Artists Exchange now offers an open clay studio! Participants must have previous experience in a clay studio. A monitor will be available Friday studio only for questions and suggestions. Open studio participants will have access to the studio during select times to work on independent projects.

Fee includes use of all Artists Exchange equipment including 7 pottery wheels, canvas covered tables, extruder and clay tools. Firing fees charged separately. Supplies (clay, glazes, etc.) can also be purchased separately through Artists Exchange.
